The results of our Chamber Legislative Issue Survey are in. A large chunk of our membership took advantage of the opportunity to weigh in on certain issues that will be debated in the coming 2007 legislative session. Thank you to all who took the survey.
This post will focus on the results for taxes. First, members were asked whether the Montana Chamber should support a statewide sales tax in order to provide either property tax or income tax relief. 46.5% favored a sales tax to eliminate or reduce property taxes, 23.2% favored a sales tax to eliminate or reduce income taxes, 28.3% did not favor a sales tax at all, and 2% had no opinion.
Second, members were asked whether the Montana Chamber should support legislation allowing larger cities to enact a local option tax. 35.4% favored support, 58.6% did not favor support, and 6.1% had no opinion.
Third, members were asked whether the Montana Chamber should support $400 one-time property tax rebates or permanent property tax reductions. 10.1% favored one-time rebates, 83.8% favored permanent reductions, and 6.1% had no opinion.
Last, members were asked whether the Montana Chamber should support elimination or further reductions of the business equipment tax. 82.8% favored elimination or reduction, 12.1% did not favor any changes, and 5.1% had no opinion.
